5. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) Director: Farhan Akhtar You know what is more fun than a road trip? A road trip with your best friends. Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, produced by Excel entertainment, is a salute to friendship. It is a journey of three friends who go, on a road trip and face the highs and lows of life together… only to evolve as human beings. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara saw Hrithik Roshan (a successful investment banker), Abhay Deol (a wealthy businessman) and Farhan Akhtar (a writer from a modest background) as friends, who are not bothered about each other’s family backgrounds. While Farhan is an extrovert and fun loving, Hrithik is serious and an introvert. In the movie, the three friends during their road trip are shown underwater diving, sky diving and running from bulls at the San Fermin festival, a week-long, historically rooted celebration held annually in the city of Pamplona in Navarre, Spain. The movie was shot almost entirely in Spain. The road trip starts for real at the beautiful coastline beaches of the Costa Brava north of Barcelona with scenes shot near Lloret de Mar. In Valencia, they join in the tomato festival La Tomatina (recreated for the movie) and join the bull running in Pamplona and finally experience flamenco dancing in Seville. Reportedly, Katrina's introduction scene was shot on a nudist beach. During the filming, they requested that beach-goers stay out of the frame so that the film would not face objections from the censors. The filming of the song Señorita took place in Alájar, a town in the province of Huelva. The crew warned the locals about the song's volume because the shooting took place at night. Reportedly, on the third day of shooting, the locals came dressed in costumes, and the mayor of Alájar joined them for the shoot. The final schedules were at Vashi and Alibag in Maharashtra. The success of the movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara has spilled over into the Spanish tourism industry as many Indian visitors to Spain are eager to visit the beautiful locations in Spain where the movie was filmed. It is estimated that the movie alone created a boost of 32 percent of tourism from India to Spain in the year following the movie release. The movie was solely responsible for making Spain a household name in India and increasing tourism from India. Apparently, Tour operators in India now offer tailored adventure tour packages to Spain from India that include activities such as deep sea diving, flamenco dancing, skydiving and bull fighting as seen in the film.

1.Queen (2013)

Director: Vikas Bahl

Queen was produced by Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and Madhu Mantena Varma. It was a story about Rani Mehra (Kangana Ranaut), a young girl living in Delhi. A day before her marriage, her fiancé, Vijay (Rajkummar Rao) tells her that he no longer wishes to marry her. The reason being, his time living abroad has made him a different person. Rani goes into a state of shock when she hears this. And so, Rani decides to go on the pre-booked honeymoon to Paris and Amsterdam hoping that time alone would help keep her mind off things. After initial hesitation, her parents agree to let her go believing that this might help her recover and restore after the rude shock.

In Paris, Rani meets Vijayalakshmi (Lisa Haydon), a free-spirited woman of French-Spanish-Indian descent. She works in the hotel where Rani is living in. Vijayalakshmi forms a special bond with Rani. The two have a series of adventures. Rani finally seems to be getting out of her shell. Once, she takes a selfie of herself while wearing a revealing outfit and accidently sends it to Vijay. When Vijay sees this picture of Rani his interest in her is reignited. He decides to get back with her again.

When Rani arrives in Amsterdam, she finds out that she is booked in a hostel room along with three other guys, Taka from Japan, Tim from France and Oleksander from Russia. Rani becomes good friends with the boys. They spend time roaming around the city, shopping and even visiting strip clubs. At the club, Rani befriends a pole dancer, Roxette/Rukhsar, a Pakistani girl who is the sole bread-earner for her family back in Lahore and who is also a friend of Vijaylakshmi. Watching a woman take charge of her own life inspired Rani to do the same. One day, she finds Vijay waiting for her in front of the hostel. Vijay apologises and asks Rani to reconsider the relationship. Rani refuses to accept his apology then but says that she will think about it. Back in Delhi, Rani visits Vijay. Vijay believes that she has forgiven him. Instead, Rani hands him her engagement ring and after saying ‘thank you’ as she walks away with a smile.

Given her arc, Rani’s destination in Queen had to be Amsterdam, a city bustling with cycles, music and people. The remixed version of Hungama ho gaya was shot at Club NL. The film was shot over a period of 45 days, starting with Paris, followed by Amsterdam and Delhi. The makers didn’t have a huge budget. They reportedly took a crew of 25 people from India to shoot the film in about 145 locations in 40 days. Rani’s journey is metaphoric – in that it opens new vistas of self-understanding and that of the world. It liberates her from the past and ushers her into a new future.

2.Highway (2014)

Director: Imtiaz Ali

Highway, produced by Imtiaz Ali and Sajid Nadiadwala, is a story about Veera Tripathi (Alia Bhatt), a daughter of a rich business tycoon based in Delhi. A day before her wedding, she gets kidnapped from a petrol pump on a highway while her fiancé remains confused with fear. When the kidnappers realise that she is the daughter of a big industrialist they panic, and decide to keep moving along with her on the highway in order to avoid the risk of being tracked down. But Veera begins to feel more and more free with each passing day. In fact, she becomes so comfortable with Mahabir (Randeep Hooda), her kidnapper, that she evens shares the horrors of being sexually abused in childhood with him. She tells him that the abduction came as a blessing in disguise. As they keep travelling, she also finds out that Mahabir had a disturbing childhood as well. His father used to abuse him and his mother was used a sex slave. They draw towards each other. They stay together in a hill-top house during which Veera reveals that it was her life-long dream to have a small home of her own in the mountains. But this doesn’t last long as one morning the police finally track down Veera’s location and Mahabir gets shot. After she’s brought back, she confronts her uncle who assaulted her as a child. She decides to leave her family and goes to live in the mountains.

Initially, the director planned to shoot along Bengal-Bihar-Odisha highway road belt but later opted to shoot along the road highways of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir, making the film first of its kind to shoot such. Some scenes were shot in Kuchaman valley, where the sand dunes provided the changing landscpae. The crew also went to Gurais, Kashmir to shoot a song and some sequences in the valley. The scenes in the Aru valley and Chandanwari near Pahalgam in South Kashmir looked picturesque and beautiful. The poignant beauty of Kashmir added to the pathos of the film, which was all about finding magic in the inherent melancholy of the protagonists’ lives.
