Saif Ali Khan opens up about being the first mainstream Indian actor to make digital debut with Sacred Games

Saif Ali Khan has had his hands full this year with Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon, Raja Krishna Menon’s Chef and Nikkhil Advani’s production, Baazaar. While the actor is gearing up for his next release, Kaalakaandi, helmed by Akshat Verma, he is also currently shooting for his Netflix series ‘Sacred Games’.

Saif Ali Khan has become the first mainstream Indian actor to venture into a digital platform with an original series of Netflix called ‘Sacred Games’. Talking about why he chose to get into digital space, Saif Ali Khan said, “It is the future of movies. We have all kind of bigger films, the so-called mainstream, blockbuster films. I wouldn’t call it niche, but I would call it unpretentious films. I think my acting improved working with some of these actors. It was a really good experience.”

Speaking about working with Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, Saif added, “I trust my director and what he wants and his creative world. That’s why a responsive director is very important. Some guys are little passive. Some people ask me, ‘does it really matter?’ I say it does matter because my first audience is the director. I am not thinking about the audience when I am acting. It’s not like I am performing on a big stage or something. I am doing very much for this guy. If I trust him then I am comfortable with it. ”

Saif further added, “The idea is to be creative and do some new things. It’s cool when you are working with a director and you get to do some mad stuff. I think a reputation of a good actor should be one who is sailable but gets to do out of the box things as well. He’s interested in his art also. It’s not just about keeping an eye on the numbers. ”

On being the first mainstream star-actor to venture into a digital platform, Saif Ali Khan said, “I quite like the reputation of being an actor as well. What I mean by that is I am thinking more like an actor than a star, perhaps, these days. I just want to be creatively satisfied. I want to feel good doing it, and I don’t want to follow rules. I don’t want to be worried about anything as long as I have integrity and I am working hard. There was a time when I had gotten lazy, but today I am up at 7 am and on set, so I am enjoying that.”

Saif even mentioned that the long working hours on the series is quite hectic. He said, “It is hectic. We shoot for 12 hours a day and we don’t even get time for lunch. It is very interesting. He (Vikramaditya Motwane) is a very good director and watches everything closely. I think I am glad I’m working with him at this stage when I am pretty good at my job, I feel. He can tune it and he can tell me to watch that area. He is very aware and we are trying to do something special. He is also competing with the rest of the world.”

When asked whether he likes to be told what to do by a director, Saif Ali Khan further said, “I am a director’s actor and I want to be told. Sometimes, he could say things and sometimes you could be totally wrong. He can tune it and that’s what he is supposed to do. Vikramaditya Motwane is aware and I think we are shooting better than Narcos. We have shot in live locations and very cinematic Mumbai. It looks very rich. The production value is greater.”

Based on Vikram Chandra’s novel by the same name, ‘Sacred Games’ is a crime drama that delves into the dark and gritty world of Mumbai city and features the actor in the role of Inspector Sartaj Singh. The show will also star Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the prominent role of gangster Ganesh Gaitonde whereas Radhika Apte plays the role of RAW analyst Anjali Mathur. Based on reality, the series will trace the deep nexus of crime and politics as it takes you through the life of a police officer named Sartaj Singh.
