I don’t think it was even publicized correctly, Saif Ali Khan speaks up on Chef failure at the box office11

Saif Ali Khan is one of those actors who continues to make films regardless of their fate at the box office. With two of his movies Rangoon and Chef failing to do business this year, Saif Ali Khan still thinks taking good roles is much better irrespective of the films’ fates.

On Wednesday, Bollywood Hungama had a fun chat with Saif Ali Khan at the trailer launch of his upcoming film Kaalakaandi where he spoke about his recent film Chef and why he thought the film failed to work at the box office. “It’s easy to think that people no longer want to see me in a film. But I don’t do that. I get my confidence back every time, irrespective of whether my film works or not. I’ll keep working and hopefully, things will fall into place,” Saif said.

Talking about Chef failure, Saif Ali Khan said, “I like Raja’s attempt. A director is my first audience. I think it was a little European in flavour, and the drama could have been a little more. I think he generally avoids drama. I think the palette of this film was a little western. I also got some good reviews, but then some things are out of your control. It’s sad but I wish it had done better. But, I think people like different kind of movies in India. I think they would have wanted to see more food, working in the New York kitchen or the high-pressure job. It’s the various things it could have been. I still think it was a good movie, and I enjoyed my work in it. I think people expected a bit more. I also don’t think it was even publicized correctly. I didn’t see enough buzz around the film. It’s okay doing the interviews. But, with films like that, you have got to show the trailer, hoardings, and you have to spend money on the publicity.”

Saif Ali Khan further added why proper marketing is important for movies like Chef. He said, “Sometimes, these days, I think people don’t want to spend money on marketing. You are going to Bigg Boss or Comedy Nights or something and talk about the movie because you feel that will help. But, it won’t help because people, if they liked the trailer, they will go and watch it. But, if you go and say at hundred events that please go and see my film and dance at the train station, it won’t help you!”

When asked whether a man in the kitchen wasn’t a relatable story for the audience, Saif said, “When we were making the film, we were told that the profession is not the traditional heroic one. But, it can be. Was it the most dramatic story we could have told about Chef? I don’t know.”

Saif Ali Khan, lastly, talked about the Dil Chahta Hai reference in Chef where his character mentions that he had visited Goa with his friends 20 years ago. Talking about the same, he said, “Raja Krishna Menon wanted that and of course, it was intentional. I thought it is not going to connect with the people. But, it did. I was totally wrong about it.”

On the work front, Saif Ali Khan stars in Delhi Belly writer Akshat Verma’s directorial debut, Kaalakaandi. The film which is a raucous tale about life, death, karma, that barrels through one monsoon night in Mumbai, talks about the journey of six characters from different walks of life. It will release on 12th January 2018.
